The WVTA Young Trappers Education Program has graduated over 500 trappers since its beginning in 1998. Classes are held each year in conjunction with the annual convention. We currently offer both beginner and intermediate trapper education classes.
Class instructors for 2012 include Corbett Patton and Janet Hodge, beginner education; Mike Gray, Elizabeth LaRue, Ron White, Cliff Brown and John Thomas, intermediate education. Continuing Education Our veteran trappers can benefit by our continuing education programs. We currently offer skinning and fleshing demonstrations at each fur auction. These demonstrations can provide hands-on training for both beginners and advanced fur handlers. We initiated a fur grading clinic in 2010, and have several apprentices who are receiving 'on the job training' at each of our fur auctions. The clinic first began with a printed manual and several hours of hands-on instruction. Those interested in becoming graders then work at the auctions, obtaining additional hands-on instruction.
